History of the New Orleans Greys
The New Orleans Greys was a military unit consisting of about 120 men that was raised in New Orleans on October 13th, 1835 for the purpose of joining the Texian Army and fighting for Texas’ independence from Mexico. The men wore grey fatigue uniforms hence the name “New Orleans Greys”. As the newly formed militia crossed over the Sabine River and into Texas, a group of appreciative settlers made and presented them with the now-famous flag. The New Orleans Greys Flag is one of only two flags that survived the war and are still in existence today (the other being the San Jacinto Battle Flag) and is in the custody of a museum in Mexico City. The flag was saved by Santa Anna himself after the Battle of the Alamo and sent back to Mexico City (where it remains today) as proof that he was fighting more than just a revolution of Texians but also trained military units sent to Texas from the United States. One of the Greys died at the Siege of Bexar. Twenty-One were lost at Goliad and twenty-three fought and died at the Alamo where the flag was also captured. Seven of the Greys participated in the Battle of San Jacinto. Despite multiple attempts by the US and Texas governments over the course of several decades, Mexico has declined to return the flag.
Cotton flags feature a very heavy, luxurious look and feel. They are commonly used indoors because of their old-world, hand-crafted appearance but can also be flown outside for parades and special events, although they are not very durable or fade-resistant with prolonged exposure to the outdoor elements. Cotton flags are also suitable for tea staining and/or framing and hanging indoors.
